Former President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he is doubling tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports from Canada to 50 percent, citing Ontario's decision to impose a 25 percent tariff on electricity exports to the U.S.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said he has directed his commerce secretary to implement an additional 25 percent tariff on the products, set to take effect Wednesday morning.

"Also, Canada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250 percent to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has long been considered outrageous. I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area," Trump wrote.

He also warned that tariffs on Canadian automobiles could be "substantially increased" on April 2 if Canada does not eliminate "other egregious, long-time tariffs."
