Experts advise caution, no need to panic over HMPV

The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), first identified in northern China earlier this winter, has now been reported in Karnataka, India.

Experts assure the public that while HMPV presents symptoms similar to influenza, it is generally not fatal in most cases.

Health professionals have urged people not to panic, emphasizing the importance of adhering to preventive measures. The virus usually causes mild symptoms such as a cold or runny nose but can lead to severe complications like pneumonia, particularly in vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.

Following its detection in China, authorities issued warnings as the virus primarily affects children. When asked about the risk of HMPV transmission in Bangladesh, Tahmina Shirin, Director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), declined to comment, citing an urgent meeting outside Dhaka.

Public health expert and IEDCR Advisor Mushtuq Husain told bdnews24.com that the virus is not new to Bangladesh, as it has been present in the country and worldwide.

“The symptoms of this virus are similar to influenza. It has been here before and still exists. There is no need for alarm," Dr. Mushtuq said. "We should remain cautious, but panic is unnecessary.”

Dr. Mushtuq explained that while HMPV is generally not life-threatening, individuals with pre-existing health conditions are at greater risk.

“Any illness can pose serious risks for those with comorbidities. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable, similar to influenza,” he added.

To mitigate infection risks, Dr. Mushtuq recommended regular handwashing, wearing masks, avoiding contact with symptomatic individuals, and seeking medical attention in severe cases.

He also suggested incorporating HMPV into the influenza surveillance system to track and study the virus.

“By including it in surveillance, we can sequence the virus's genome to monitor potential changes or increased severity,” he concluded.
