Middle East Live Updates: 15 Reported Killed by IDF in Southern Lebanon, Ministry Claims
A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza took effect a week ago. Under the multi-phased agreement, hostages held in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails have begun to be released.
In Lebanon, the November ceasefire remains intact despite ongoing Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions. Israeli officials describe these strikes as responses to ceasefire violations by the Iranian-backed militant group. Meanwhile, Israeli forces continue operations in the Syrian border region, where victorious rebels are establishing a transitional government.
Tensions between Israel and Iran remain high, fueled by recent tit-for-tat long-range strikes and mutual threats of further military action. Additionally, exchanges of attacks between the Israeli Defense Forces and Yemen's Houthi forces persist.
Hamas criticizes Trump's comments on relocating Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan.
On Sunday, the Hamas-run Government Media Office in Gaza issued a statement strongly condemning discussions surrounding what it referred to as the "so-called transfer of Gaza citizens to neighboring countries."
Speaking aboard Air Force One on Saturday, former President Donald Trump mentioned a conversation with King Abdullah II of Jordan about potentially accommodating more Palestinians from Gaza. "I've had a great relationship with him over the years. He's done an incredible job, hosting millions of Palestinians in a humane way, and I commended him for it," Trump said. "Jordan has truly excelled in this regard."
Trump added, "I suggested to him that it would be great if Jordan could take in more, given the current state of Gaza—it’s in chaos, a complete mess."
When asked for clarification, Trump indicated a preference for both Jordan and Egypt to take in additional Palestinians from Gaza. "They have the capacity. I’d like Egypt to take people, too. I have a meeting scheduled with General El-Sisi tomorrow, and I’ll bring this up. There are about a million and a half people in Gaza, and the idea is to clear out the area," he stated.
In response, Hamas on Sunday urged Arab nations to reject these suggestions. Their statement emphasized, "Our people must have the right to determine their own destiny."
