Former U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he does not believe it is practical for Ukraine to join NATO and that it is unlikely Ukraine will regain all of its territory.
Trump discussed the war in Ukraine during phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, marking his first major diplomatic move in a conflict he has vowed to end.
He stated that he and Putin anticipate meeting in the future, likely in Saudi Arabia. Describing his call with Putin as a "good conversation," Trump said it lasted over an hour.
Zelensky's office confirmed that his call with Trump also lasted about an hour, while the Kremlin reported that Putin's conversation with Trump extended nearly an hour and a half.
According to the Kremlin, Putin and Trump agreed to meet, with Putin inviting Trump to visit Moscow. Speculation has surrounded the possibility of a meeting in a third country, with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates being considered as potential venues, according to Russian sources.
