US Halts Intelligence Sharing with Ukraine Amid Rising Tensions
US Cuts Intelligence Sharing with Ukraine Amid Tensions
The United States has halted intelligence sharing with Kyiv, CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed on Wednesday, a move that could significantly impact Ukraine’s ability to target Russian forces.
The decision to suspend intelligence sharing and military aid underscores the Trump administration’s willingness to exert pressure on an ally to bring it to the negotiating table.
President Donald Trump revealed on Tuesday that he had received a letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which Zelensky expressed his willingness to engage in negotiations regarding the Russia-Ukraine war.
“I believe the pause [in intelligence sharing] that led to Ukraine’s response will be temporary,” Ratcliffe told Fox Business Network. “We will continue to work shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine to push back against aggression, while also fostering an environment for peace talks to progress.”
Three sources familiar with the situation confirmed that intelligence sharing had stopped, though the extent of the reduction was unclear. One source indicated that the cut was only “partial” but did not provide further details.
Since the war began in 2022, the US has provided Ukraine with critical intelligence, including targeting data crucial for military operations.
US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz told reporters earlier on Wednesday that the administration was reassessing all aspects of its intelligence-sharing relationship with Ukraine. “We’ve taken a step back and are reviewing the situation,” he said.
Waltz also mentioned that the US is engaged in discussions with Ukraine regarding a minerals agreement and potential peace negotiations with Russia. “I expect movement on this front very soon,” he added.
Zelensky to Attend EU Summit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to attend an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday, where leaders will discuss continued European support for Ukraine’s three-year fight against Russia’s invasion.
“President Zelensky will be present in person,” an EU official confirmed, noting that this marks the first meeting of all 27 EU leaders since Zelensky’s recent White House confrontation with Trump.
Additionally, Ukraine and the US have agreed to hold further discussions, according to Andriy Yermak, Zelensky’s chief of staff.
“Had a phone conversation with US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz. We have scheduled a meeting between our teams in the near future to continue this important work,” Yermak said on X.
