China and Vietnam pledge to strengthen ties
Xi: Countries set a good example of solidarity
Xi Jinping Visits Vietnam to Strengthen China-Vietnam Strategic Partnership
HANOI, Vietnam – April 14, 2025 – Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and President of China, attended a welcoming ceremony hosted by To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee, in Hanoi on Monday.
During his official two-day state visit, Xi emphasized the importance of reinforcing strategic resolve between China and Vietnam—two key beneficiaries of economic globalization. He called for joint opposition to unilateralism and protectionist practices, and urged both nations to safeguard the global free trade system and ensure stability in industrial and supply chains.
At their bilateral meeting held at the CPV Central Committee headquarters, Xi highlighted the shared goal of peaceful development and modernization. He noted that with a combined population exceeding 1.5 billion, China and Vietnam have a unique capacity to contribute to regional peace and global stability.
"A small boat cannot weather rough seas alone—only by rowing together can we go far," Xi said, using a metaphor to illustrate the importance of solidarity.
Marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two neighboring socialist states, Xi remarked that the two countries have long stood by each other in the pursuit of national independence, socialism, and modernization.
"Amid global turbulence, China and Vietnam have remained committed to peace and development, deepening cooperation and offering much-needed stability to the world," he added.
To Lam, in his remarks, emphasized that advancing Vietnam-China relations serves the fundamental interests of both peoples and aligns with the current global trends. He expressed Vietnam's intention to deepen high-level exchanges, share governance experiences, and strengthen political trust.
Vietnam also aims to elevate its partnership with China across various areas, including trade, technology, infrastructure, environmental protection, and strategic security, he said.
Following their talks, the two leaders witnessed the presentation of 45 signed bilateral cooperation agreements covering a wide range of fields including infrastructure connectivity, artificial intelligence, customs, agricultural trade, media, and people-to-people exchanges.
This visit follows recent engagements between the two leaders, including a phone call earlier this year in which they launched the China-Vietnam Year of People-to-People Exchanges.
Upon arrival at Noi Bai International Airport, Xi expressed hopes for more in-depth cooperation with Vietnam and reaffirmed China’s commitment to advancing bilateral ties to a higher level and broader scope.
With over two decades as Vietnam’s largest trading partner and bilateral trade reaching more than $260 billion last year, China continues to play a crucial role in Vietnam's economy. In 2024, Chinese direct investment in Vietnam exceeded $2.5 billion, underscoring the robust economic relationship.
