Sergey Lavrov says US-Russia relations are going nowhere.
The Russian foreign minister says discussions on cooperation are failing to produce results
Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday that despite optimistic rhetoric about the vast potential of relations between the United States and Russia, “nothing is happening” in practice.
After winning the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Donald Trump resumed direct dialogue with Vladimir Putin and repeatedly pledged to end the war in Ukraine, though a peace deal has remained out of reach.
Lavrov said that discussions about cooperation in technology, energy, and other sectors had so far produced no concrete results, although Moscow valued Trump’s decision to reopen talks with Russia.
“However, nothing is happening in real life,” Lavrov told RT India in English, according to a transcript released by the Russian Foreign Ministry.
He added that the current engagement with Moscow largely mirrors the approach taken under former U.S. President Joe Biden. According to Lavrov, sanctions introduced during Biden’s administration remain in place, while the Trump administration has also introduced new measures targeting the Russian economy.
